Arrow Thieves: Chapter 1
The Massassi Temple » Levels/Mods » Jedi Knight Single Player Level » Arrow Thieves: Chapter 1
Description
The first chapter of the Arrow Thieves Trilogy. You play Nox, and you are on a mission. A suspected spy may be in your rebel group. Break into Lord Roye's estate in Westshire and steal his journal. This should give you some information about the suspected spy. While your at it, grab a little something for yourself...500 in loot should do. This single player level is part of the Arrow Thieves story. It contains 2 new weapons ( a bow and arrow and a sword ) , new enemies, and an expansive level set in a manor. This level is set in the dark ages of course. Look for the second chapter...coming soon.

1) Aiming with the bow was nearly impossible since there were no external crosshairs and the arrows shoot out of your character's lower right torso. External animations frequently mess up and cause your bow to be pointing the wrong way.
2) 1st person was disabled = highly annoying, especially because of the reasons mentioned above. I'm starting to think someone got lazy and didn't want to animate the POV bow (kinda how I felt w/RoX).
3) The doors got almost as many kills as the soldiers and most of them HOMed.
4) Stealth is encouraged, yet nearly impossible due to enemy placement and JKs sensitive AI (though that's not really your fault). I didn't feel like much of a thief.
5) You start with the bryer pistal.
Not bad considering this is JK and the first level in the series, however it's far from being good as well. A lot of these bugs could have (and should have) been fixed before release. A little more time and beta testing would have gone a long way. Rating: 6
I agree with the words of the previous reviewer - The bow is extremely difficult to aim, in part because of the obscenely short range and the fact I can't go first person with it. I have a hunch there's some sort've locational damage system at work that only applies to the enemy, due to sometimes getting one hit kills with the arrows. The range is so short you have to practically be in -SWORD RANGE- to hit something.
Yes, you have a bryar. It was my best friend.
The ladder was irritating to go up.
The architecture is good.
I felt like I was playing a scavenger hunt when looking for loot and the diary. The Modesitt hates having to play scavenger hunts. Really, really hates playing scavenger hunts.
Like in many levels, the text on my screen did not match up with the spoken dialogue. I mean the guy says one thing, the text says another. Ickys, but the voice/new sounds is cool still.
Personally, I'd prefer the enemies(particulairily the sword guys) take more hits to kill, and for there to be -LESS- of them.
Is it worth the download? Yes. I'm a 56K user, BTW.
I look foward to the next installment in this trilogy.
Oh and one suggestion - You have the arrow 3do's appear when you miss, could you make it so they can be picked up somehow?
One bug I found though, was that sometimes you wouldn't get the message when you picked up healing potions.
I repeat - Download the level. There's some problems, but its still quite fun.
Short Range? The bow has the same system as thermies...if you hold the button down then look go you can adjust how far it shoots...up to like 5 jkus.
The next 2 chapters will be drastically different from Thief.
-cutscenes archi seemed rushed
-adding a 3rd person crosshair is easy and would have helped some
-adding a little delay to the key markers so enemies hurt you after/during a swing instead of before might have helped
-I ignored the bryar when rating
-the fact that only half the BM's were changed added a bad first impression
But wow! after that things went uphill...
+Great level except for a bunch for the occasional misplaced texture and geo 4...
+I can't say much more then that the level was outstanding...
+Awesome level...
+Nice level...
Have I equalized the +'s and -'s ?
Anyway overal rating was an 8 and thats a compliment from someone tempted to give his own work a 7.

What are you talking about? There must be something wrong with your computer..
1.) The arrows did work, you just aren't good enough to hit anything
2.) the sword did work it was weapon 0 and killed everything in about 2 hits. (again, maybe you just suck at JK)
3.) Why couldn't you not pick up any loot? Just get it like a regular item.
4.) It was possible to get up the ladder without cheating, again, your suckiness at JK comes into play.
Geez.
You don't notice the little things.
Like the bug where when killing citizens, sometimes it spawns a health pack. Might wanna change the 3do's on those.
The red targettng hairs(like what you see with grip) for all enemys was great for spotting them. I can't even begin to describe how many times I have been killed by my own clumbsiness and not being able to see where I was being shot from.
I also smacked myself for not realizing "DOH! Arrows are based on #4 where dets normally are, MAYBE THEY WORK LIKE DETS!" Stupid Mode. Once that was pointed out, I used arrows liberally. Especially for ambushing the enemy - It took some practice but I can finally hit them at a decent range.
Keep in mind I just played this level a second time through. That alone should tell you it can't be -THAT- bad.
Frantik: Glad you didn't take the review negatively. I recognize the JK engine is extremely limited and the work you did was great (all things considered), but I know your capable of better. I'm sure the next installment will be much improved.
I admire the ladder idea. It's a little difficult to maneuver, but it's much better than some levels i've seen where you can't climb the ladders at all.
Good level overall, i just wish i could play it the way it was meant to be played.
Just run the .exe and then go into your JK folder and run ATC1.bat. the gob should be in JK Folder/atc1
I'm guessing you didn't follow the instructions and just put the gob into episode?
My one qualm, okay, two, was that I couldn't find that stupid book ANYWHERE!!!!!!
Also, I didn't like that ladder, and it killed me once, :P
my fault.
downside: arrows are a little tricky.
upside: once i killed two guys with one arrow!
hey, could you make it so you can hit the gongs? tap the kegs? oh, and what's the point of jail cells that open from the inside?
just a thought.
really hope you finish chapter 2 soon.
THis is a MUST HAVE, completely rejeuvenates the old JK engine, great atmosphere, great weapons (you'll have to get used to the longbow), great sounds, well...
GRRRREAT !
I give it an eight, because of two things: One, it had the bryar pistol, which didn't make any sense, and the stupid ladder had to be flown up instead of climbed up. Now don't go saying I suck at JK, it was a royal pain it the patookus!
-----------
Just Bring It!
I installed ATC1, and i runed ATC1.bat, and the game didnt started, and "he" sad:
"blablabla... :D Chapter 2 is comin..."
And nothing happend. ???. How can i run the ATC1??? Pls tell me, i must play it :P
-'s
-start with a bryar pistol
-the ladder was a pain in the...........
-no first person
-shooting with the bow is average
+'s
+the bryar pistol helped :)
+i got pass the ladder without cheating ;)
+the textures were great
+good enemy placement
+good plot
Overall i give u a 9/10
omg! i was dissapointed. a vteran level editor you say. maybe u ment a veteran at architecture. cause that was it. i hope part 2 is good. but 11 megs. it wasnt much 4 that. im going to have to say how bad everything else was. ok people pointed put the bryar thing. its true. u have a bryer. still i resisted using it to get the fell of the level. but i advise ppl to use it since the bow is impossible. dont use the sword cause 1 enemy hit takes of 30 hp. and u abused that guy for saying the ladder was impossible to climb. while it was possible to climb it was bloody hard. the enemys had crossbows. i want 1. the cutscene was actually the most enjoyable part. the last 1 that is. and while we are on the topic of the ladt cut y did that guy run sideways. now im sorry to say but if this was ur first level it would be an extreamly good level but not if ur a veteran. if u load an arrow the player runs sideways (u seem to that frantik.) and y u call it frantik studios. if u r a studio its not a very good 1. but dont get me wrong the architecture was fabulous the textures were great but im just saying that really is about it.
now to list the extreamly bad errors u made:
1-y do so many ppl get off that beds r metal. dont make it metal. all u hav to do is go to thing flags and flag it as earth. that sounds like standing on a bed.
now the really big huge error:
2-wen u move the throne it goes straight into the ground.
NOW THE WORST ERROR OF THE DAY.
3-when u press the locked doors it doesnt say locked it says cog_01001. u obviously dont no how to fix that. so i will tell u.
in jed press f8. then press edit strings. the where it says key write: cog_01001
where it says string. write somthing like locked!!
if u dont do this its just really gay. still the level is worth the 11 meg dl. but the only reason i keep it is because it has its own ms doc program so it doesnt waste space in my episode directory.
but if u improve on wat i said chapter to should be quite good.
i gave a 7.
