Forums - Brian @ 9:36 AM
The original forums are back up, but the DNS records may not have updated for your local servers. So basically, until they're working for everyone, I'm not going to change the link. But if you can access them (http://forums.massassi.net/), I encourage you to go ahead and use them. Talk about a headache. I'll give everyone more information on what exactly went on when I hash out the details of what's going to happen next. That sounded pretty cryptic, eh? Well, just as a hint, with money from advertising going downhill, and Massassi traffic going uphill, we're having quite a few problems making ends meet. I'm trying to hash out a deal right now with UGO, and I should find out about that Monday or Tuesday. If that doesn't work, I have no idea what we're going to do. If you know of a web host that can offer a dedicated server (please no virtual accounts) with >160GB of transfer per month (no "unlimited bandwidth" providers as they're all lying anyway) for a really good price (I'm talking: cheap), feel free to drop me a line.

Major Updates at The Admirals Command Chamber - Hebedee @ 1:04 PM
Ryan of hosted site The Admirals Command Chamber has had many updates since the new year, including new levels and updating the level features section. Here's what he has to say about the level features section.
I'm getting ready to enhance the features section, so any feature that has not been updated in the last 12 months will be removed during this process. If you are the author of any of the following levels and you are still working on it, let me know and send new screenshots and progress information. Otherwise, they will be deleted in about a week's time.

On the removal list:
  • Allies of the Force
  • I-153 Imperial Patrol Craft
  • Imperial Retribution
  • Jedi Academy Trilogy
  • Mos Eisley Spaceport
  • Saber Battle on Naboo
  • Search for Revenge
  • Star Wars: A Jedi's Journey
  • The Lost Fortress
  • Smugglers of Nomad 9
  • The Third Death Star
All other features will remain. Thanks!
The new levels that they posted look great, so head on over to The Admirals Command Chamber.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Deathmatch Arena - Brian @ 4:17 AM
File: Deathmatch Arena
Author: Saber_Tux
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level is designed for 4-5 players to fight with guns & sabers.
New MotS Multiplayer Level: Pit Stop - Brian @ 4:15 AM
File: Pit Stop
Author: DrodiT
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level was made for quick fighting. Good for saber dueling and soldier shoot-outs. It reminds me much of Gantry. It takes place in the high clouds above the planet Adega. It is a rest area where travelers can stop and take a break from the long journey. And while the owner of the pit stop is dead in his room the pit stop has been over run by YOU (and your enemies).
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: A Stroll Through Town - Brian @ 4:13 AM
File: A Stroll Through Town
Author: ThreeDee
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: I originally made this level for the JKT partial conversion at http://www.jedinights.com/JKT, but that was months and months ago and I want to get this out there before it becomes completely obsolete in the face of so many amazing user-made levels by the community. It does have one annoying crash as a result of many explosions at once, which I tried and tried to remedy without success. However, I was working on it for over a month and feel it would be a waste to never release it. It's a medium-sized level with good flow (there are three exits out of most rooms) and some of the best architecture and connectivity I've ever done for JK, save the level I submitted to the second Massassi level contest, Sky Station.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Trainer - Brian @ 4:11 AM
File: Trainer
Author: Saber_Phantom1
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: 5 rooms to choose from. 4 of them are for sabers and 1 is for guns. It has lots of secrets in it too.
New MotS Multiplayer Level: Surface Disposal Outpost - Brian @ 4:08 AM
File: Surface Disposal Outpost
Author: adrenal_medulla
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a small to medium level intended for 2-4 players. It is situated on the surface of a large asteroid mined for its chemicals and gasses. Waste is sent here to the surface to be jettisoned. At the bottom of the level is an acid bath which will cause damage if fallen into. Just above the acid is an area big enough for good gunplay. In the center is a tower with an enclosed, circular room for close saber fighting. Above this room is the roof of the tower which allows for more open saber fighting and for shooting at players down below. There are also vents that will carry players from the bottom to the roof. Includes four secret areas.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: MBHG Castle Fight 1 - Brian @ 4:07 AM
File: MBHG Castle Fight 1
Author: Brad Nott (MBHG_BOLLUX_LM)
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a large, mostly indoor, mansion/castle level made for the MBHG guild. It is the first multiplayer level that I have ever made and published. There are 8 secret passageways, all major weapons (which are all mostly hidden in secret places), and some framerate problems, but they really aren't too bad. E-mail me if you need any help in finding all of my 8 secret passages. Thank you all editors whose mats and 3do's I have used in this level, I cannot remember your names, but you can take all the credit for the decorative part you played in this level.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: GunStar - Brian @ 4:05 AM
File: GunStar
Author: Gundam Blackstealth
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This level is medium sized and has two floors.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Duel Over Death - Brian @ 4:03 AM
File: Duel Over Death
Author: Sith Scout
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a medium sized multiplayer level with lots of regenerating glass and also an indoor ice rink. There is a pit that you can fall into and you die unless you fall on one of the special squares. Also this level has a room where you can use force throw a ton. This level is for designed for 2-4 people. This is my first level I have ever made so E-mail me about it.
Etc. - Brian @ 3:57 AM
The FileLeech.com deal has been postponed for a little while. I'm sorry but I can't elaborate any further at this point. Expect more information towards the end of the month. So anyway, this means we're going to start posting levels again, so feel free to send them in.

Starfighters Mod - blujay @ 10:20 PM
DFLev sent us this e-mail about their Starfighters mod for JK:
For the last few months, a little known Dark Forces editing group slowly migrated from strictly Dark Forces: Rebel Agent to include Jedi Knight as well. For some time, people have been making starship mods that allow you to fly as a ship of your choice, but most of those mods ended up scrapped or discarded by the JK community because of their poor make. One of the DFLev editors noticed this problem and downloaded a few mods himself. After looking at the coding and other files, we decided that it wouldn't be all that hard to make a halfway decent starfighter mod.

The work began using one of the mods that is no longer able to be found on any JK servers, but it was a start. Using the 3dos and playing with the COG scripts, a simple MOD was created. After a few successful tests, questions like "how about charging lasers and shields" and "how about varying hull and shield strength" came up. All of this got integrated into the MOD Starfighters v1.0 Beta. The Internet Gaming Zone proved a good place to grab some Beta testers, who unanimously decided that the MOD was actually fun to play.

Since the original verison, which included the A-wing, TIE Fighter, and TIE Interceptor, we've added the X-wing. Although the X-wing has serious limitations (due to compatability issues), version 2.0 of the MOD will greatly extend the X-wing's abilities. Also, since the main DFLev server is down for some reason, a mirror site with screenshots and updates has been set up at http://members.nbci.com/hbcommand/pictures/index.htm until we can get the original site up and running again.
So, head on over and take a look.
DBSSTC Web Site - blujay @ 10:14 PM
Pokewedge sent us word of the DBSSTC Web site. The screenshots look pretty good, so have a look.
Mplayer.com Supports Jedi Knight - blujay @ 8:30 PM
Mplayer.com now supports Jedi Knight games. Take a look here. Thanks to JediideJ for letting us know.
One Last Logo - blujay @ 1:18 PM
Well, here's probably the last logo of the year. It's by LazLo. You can see it here.

Announcing - CTF Level Contest - Archimedes @ 2:54 PM
That's right. The Massassi CTF Level Contest is officially underway. The deadline for the contest is set for February 28, 2001. This gives you roughly two months to create, test, and submit your CTF level. Be sure to read the rules. So, open your editing programs and start cleaving away!
Tiny Textures Closing Shop - Archimedes @ 2:42 PM
The everfamous Tiny Textures, the site that just couldn't stop handing out top-quality mats to beautify your level, is unfortunately closing shop. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the wonderful gallery, as well as the downloads page for all the great texture packs. Farewell, Tiny Textures.
Star Wars Galaxies: 'Question Roundup' - Archimedes @ 2:18 PM
This is a wee bit late, but important nonetheless. On the official Star Wars Galaxies forum, Ralph 'Holocron' Koster, the Creative Director of Star Wars Galaxies, has posted a 'question roundup' covering a lot of newly announced features and options that will be available in the game. Also, there is a current thread that asks you for a simple, one sentence question for the development team; if you want your suspicions answered, be sure to check that out as well.

Many thanks to Jedi Legacy for the news.
ISDA Sues St. Louis County - Brian @ 12:10 AM
Wolfy sends word that Happy Puppy has posted an article regarding a lawsuit filed against the government for trying to regulate the video games industry. Apparently, a new law bans minors from buying and renting "M" rated games, as well as even entering video game arcades.
"Video games are a modern form of artistic expression that have the same level of First Amendment protection as films, records, and books," stated IDSA president Douglas Lowenstein.
A very interesting read, it's definitely something that can affect all us computer gaming fans.
JK Level Contest @ Blaumph.com - Brian @ 12:03 AM
A new JK site called Blaumph.com is holding a JK MP level contest (I guess it's the cool thing to do nowadays). They're even offering a prize for the winner...
Etc. - Brian @ 12:00 AM
Okay I updated the Editor's Corner a bit tonight, you can now see the email addresses of the people who post. Sorry for leaving that out. Sorry for the late news (above) but it appears our news guys (Archimedes, Hebedee) are taking a break.

New Partnership: FileLeech.com - Brian @ 7:00 PM
The Massassi Temple is about to open a partnership with FileLeech.com, a files site in the I/O Error Network. What will this partnership mean for our visitors? It means all the levels and mods that we have hosted on our SWFiles.net domain will now be hosted by FileLeech.com. The level download pages will now forward you to the FileLeech servers after counting your download.

You're probably asking... Why? The reason is that our bandwidth prices have skyrocketed, and we are no longer able to afford them. Not to mention the fact that internet advertising is currently in a slump... FileLeech.com has been extremely helpful in getting our files mirrored (should be complete some time this week or next week). I would like to personally thank Zerozombie for his help in getting this set up quickly. I would also like to thank SL_Jedi_Bubba_Fatt for pointing out FileLeech.com in the first place.

Please Note: We cannot post any levels while this transfer is going on. I will try to provide a download link for the ones sent in, but I'm still devising a solution to this problem. I will keep you updated.
Last of the Logos - blujay @ 3:20 PM
Well, here are some final logos for our holiday season. Most of these were sent in before Christmas; I'm sorry for taking so long to post them.

Well, this will probably be the final posting of logos for this holiday season, unless there are any last-second submissions.

The contest has really been a success this year, with eighty-nine (yes, 89) logos posted, plus thirty-eight from last year.

To all the authors who have taken the time to make up a logo and send it in, a big thanks and best holiday wishes. Next year's should be even more amazing.

New Feature: Editor's Corner - Brian @ 2:09 PM
I am very pleased to announce the immediate release of The Massassi Temple's newest feature: The Editor's Corner. The Editor's Corner is a place for members of the Massassi community to share screenshots and information on their current projects. It's a totally free service and you can update it as often as you'd like.

The Editor's Corner is designed to give authors a place to show off their work without requiring them to learn HTML, FTP, and whatever else it takes to get images on the web. Once you are signed up, you can upload your images to our server via an easy-to-use web interface. Recent updates are now listed on the main page, and when you add images, you are also presented with a URL that you can paste into the showcase forum.

As with any new service, there are bound to be a couple of bugs. We've done our best to beta-test the heck out of it, but likely there's something we missed. If you find anything out of place, don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Be sure to read and follow all the rules before posting. As I mentioned in those rules, since this service is easily viewable on the main page, we must have a more strict content control policy.
