Level Design Article - Brian @ 6:20 AM
Blue's News pointed out a great article on Gamasutra called The Art and Science of Level Design. It was originally published @ the 2000 Game Developers Conference. It talks about the ever-expanding role of level designers in the industry, rules for designers to live by, techniques, and even what the future may hold. It's definitely a great read. Here's a snip to get you interested.
Risk Incentive
In single player design, there are oodles of ways a designer can utilize this time tested technique to let the gamer make his own decisions about how much trouble he's going to get himself into for treasure.

That's the beauty of risk incentive. The player weighs the risk; he assesses the challenge, and gets to make a decision. He feels like he's in control, and the designer provides him with a choice.

For example, in a traditional shooter the designer might place ammunition or health below a pair of sentry turrets. The turrets can easily be avoided by crawling behind a pair of desks, however if the player wants to make a dash for the goodies it is his choice. Therefore, if the guns rip him to shreds and he screws up he blames himself, not the designers.

Massassi Wars: A New Hope - Archimedes @ 4:41 PM
If you thought Spaceballs was the worst spoof of Star Wars you would ever see, think again. The folks over at The Admiral's Command Chamber have constructed a hilarious spin-off of Star Wars involving many of the Star Wars gaming community. Will the evil Massassi Empire, with the Emperor Brian, Darth Juztyn, and Grand Moff Kedri, be able to destroy one of the last standing SP communities with their new superweapon, The Massassi Level Pack 4? Or will Chris Swanwalker and Princess Matthew be able to retrieve its plans for destruction and hand them over to the capable hands of the Rebellion? This involves more people in the community than you think, so be sure to head on over and read all about it.

DBSSTC Skins - blujay @ 7:57 PM
JediideJ sent word about the DBSSTC Skins Web site. There are plenty of screenshots, so have a look.
SWTTC Updates - blujay @ 7:44 PM
Earl sent this in about the SWTTC:
First of all, the status page has been completely revamped so that it'll give you a better idea of what's done. Each level has a page to itself where you'll find a level history, progress report and new screenshots.

Make sure you drop by the Mos Eisley page to see the unveiling of it's fantastic new look.

We have also added a brand new feature for your enjoyment. Over the next few weeks, there will be a series of interviews conducted with the staff by you the fans. Our first installment will feature yours truly interviewed by Ro Wan. An ironic twist indeed. To apply to be an interviewer, send an email to swttc@hotmail.com telling us the reasons why. You have total control over the questions asked but whether or not you can get some new information out of us is up to you. Each interview with the members will appear on the team page. Read the first gripping installment here.

The members page has been brought up to date as well. Keep an eye on it over the coming weeks because each member will be given his own page. They will have free reign over what they put on display. It will be very interesting to see what everyone puts up. We may even get to see some pictures of the team.
So, take a look.

File: Thegue City Market
Author: comVeflax

New Jedi Knight Mod: Mantice Fried Chicken - Kedri @ 6:53 PM
File: Mantice Fried Chicken
Author: ID_Junkguy, RaDiCe_
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This mod replaces most of the default weapons in JK with funny new guns based on chickens and eggs. Weapons include Egg Grenades, Chicken Bow, Egg Launcher that looks like a chicken, explosive buckets of Fried Chicken, a Frying Pan that throws omelets, a Fork and Knife, and a Fighting Stick. Other features include a Colonel Sanders skin, a funny chicken taunt, and a hookshot. Most of the weapons have new 3DOs and projectiles. This mod is a Team Mantice Production (http://team_mantice.tripod.com)
New Jedi Knight Mod: Ninja Kage 7.0 - Kedri @ 5:46 PM
File: Ninja Kage 7.0
Author: ShadowX
Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: My Ninja Kage skin with my voice acting replaces Kyle Katarn:

  • Many of the normal characters are now zombies -- SP and MP
  • Five new ninja besides Kage (kah-gay; shadow) for MP games: Hayashi (ha-yah-she; forest/nature), Gouka (goh-ka; hell fire), Denkou (den-koh; lightning), Hyougen (he-yoh-gen; ice/snow field), and Shiro (she-row; white)
  • Authentic Ninja To (nin-ja toe; ninja sword) with custom moves and bloody slashes
  • The sword is much more realistic -- all moves do greater damage and can be swung faster
  • When armed with the sword, you go into "stealth mode" which makes all of your footsteps silent
  • An unused stab animation for the sword has been added and adjusted
  • Once you swing the sword for the first time, it is able to inflict damage to anything and anyone with a mere touch -- a feature that SHOULD have been in JK in the first place!
  • Authentic Kunai (koo-n'eye; ninja throwing knives) replace the Thermal Detonators, and are able to chop off limbs and heads in SP games
  • You can decapitate Stormtroopers sometimes in SP games with the sword or kunai
  • Instead of smoke trails appearing when you chop off an arm or head, blood flies about
  • Authentic Shuriken (shoo-ree-ken; ninja throwing stars) replace the Bryar Pistol
  • Sharp, spiked caltrops for injuring pursuers replace the Stormtrooper Rifle
  • Kick while holding any weapon. It isn't just one single hit like a punch -- it's six hit points in an arc!
  • Escape danger by doing an evasive back handspring
  • Use the Grappling Hook to reach far-off places
  • Force Blind is replaced with Force Push (pushes everyone in sight)
  • Force Seeing and Persuasion have less annoying/stealthier noises
  • Force Lightning is now ninja lightning magic that rains from the sky, surrounding you, as well as lancing forward from your hands
  • Force Destruction is now Crimson Rain, falling from directly above you and scattering anyone and anything all around you
  • Start the game equipped with shuriken, caltrops, kunai, ninja to, IR goggles, field light, grappling hook, and full shields
  • You can stick to and jump up walls as long as they're not vertical or leaning in your direction
  • Many character animations are improved or totally redone

New Jedi Knight Single Player Level: The New Empire Part 2 - Kedri @ 2:37 PM
File: The New Empire Part 2
    Author: Chris Swan
    Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is the sequel to The New Empire, which can be downloaded from here. It is recommended that you play The New Empire first so that you understand the story better. This level is split into three parts, all set on a new Imperial ship, and provides a lot of gameplay time. It contains a number of puzzles, cutscenes, new enemies, new weapons, and loads of other stuff never before seen in an SP level, such as coloured light corona effects, lots of breakable scenery and an escalator.
New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Scorched Lands - Kedri @ 2:30 PM
    File: Scorched Lands
    Author: TGE_Connor0
    Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: This is a small multiplayer level set on a volcanic planet. It has several lava pools and streams, some high areas for snipers, and some cave areas for dueling. This is a gunning level that doesn't have ninety rail detonators in one place, so it should be fun to play. This is my first released level, so please use the commenting system and tell me if you liked it or not.

    File: Guns of Bob

New Jedi Knight Multiplayer Level: Matrix Building - Kedri @ 2:21 PM
    File: Matrix Building
    Author: BenKenoby
    Screenshots: Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2
Description: I've tried to recreate the world at the end of the movie "The Matrix." The results are very interesting. There are two buildings facing each other with many floors and their respective roofs. There are plenty of repeaters everywhere, and you'll never be short on amunition. There are also some secret areas... I tested it last week with 5 friends, and it is very balanced; we spent 4 hours in it and it never got boring! See it also at http://www.benkenoby.com ! For 2-11 players.
