A Warm Farewell - 12/7/01
It has come time in my life to say farewell to The Massassi Temple. I've been working on the site for almost four years, and it has turned into something greater than I ever hoped for. This letter will serve as a long list of thanks for people that have helped out over the years.
Let's get the important stuff out of the way first.
- Massassi will not be closing.
- I will be signing ownership of Massassi and the massassi.net domain over to Kedri and blujay, two of the most valuable staff members Massassi has ever had, as well as Slug, one of the original creators and staff members.
- All email that has been piling up (tutorial submissions, cogs, etc.) have been forwarded to them for processing.
- Important: Since they own the site, they are under no obligation to run things "the way it's always been," so if you have any suggestions or complaints, I'm sure they'll be willing to take them into consideration.
Now for the fun stuff!
Quite a few people have asked my why I am quitting, so here's the answer. I have been working on the site for almost four years. I have met an incredible number of amazing people, and I've had a great time overall. However, I have other interests and obligations that simply must take a front seat in my life at this point. I'm two quarters away from finishing college, I've got some other offline projects that need my full attention, and finally, I'm simply drained. It's hard to find the motivation after school each day to come work on something I've been doing almost non-stop for the past four years.
Here is a list of thanks to the many people that have helped me out over the years. These are in no paticular order. It's flat impossible for me to remember everyone, and for that, I apologize. Also please forgive me if I butcher your name/nickname... it's hard to remember so many.
- First of all, thanks to each and every person that ever visited the site. Thanks to all the users that submitted levels and editing resources. Thanks to everyone who has ever sent me an email with a suggestion for improving the site. Thanks especially to all the people that took a few extra minutes to send me an email thanking me for my efforts - without such praise, I would have quit long ago.
- Thanks to Pot-Heat, the first person to spend time to help me learn how to edit. Without him, Massassi would have never been born. More than this, thanks for helping me see the vision of what Massassi could be.
- Thanks to Slug for his help in teaching me how to create "outdoor buildings," the subject of the very first tutorial at Massassi. Thanks for the absolutely massive amount of help with the site during the first half of its existence. Also, thanks for the moral support over the years and the level-headed advice I've needed so often.
- Thanks to every person who worked on the staff over the years. I think I speak for all the visitors of Massassi when I say you deserve much more than a simple thanks. Thanks especially to 8t88, EvanC, Wazzit, fourwood, Pele, and booto - all those that believed in the site in its infancy.
- Thanks to spart of JediNights.com for the original hosting of the site. Thanks for always listening when I had a problem. Thanks for making so many suggestions. Without your wisdom and knowledge, Massassi would have been a much more painful experience.
- Thanks to Raven at Telefragged for helping me with the original WWWBoard forum system - my first foray into CGI scripting.
- Thanks to every person that's ever submitted artwork to our many logo contests.
- Thanks to Lar Van Der Gant, one of the original artists for the site, and a person that was tragically killed in a car accident at such a young age. During our brief friendship, he helped me realize exactly how much a positive attitude could accomplish.
- Thanks to Juztyn, for helping with the site and my motivation over the years. Thanks for being honest with me when I was being a jerk, and thanks for not backing down when we butted heads. Friends are always more valuable when they're honest with you, and infinitely more valuable when they're understanding of your flaws.
- Thanks to Hebedee for his original management of the chat room, and thanks to oSiRiS for the current management. Also thanks to oSiRiS for the many behind-the-scenes contributions to the site and my mental well-being. There is no subsitute for a morally honest friend that has enough b*lls to stand up to someone twice his age and make the stubborn bastard (that's me) realize when he's being a jerk.
- Thanks to every news site that has ever announced this site. We never paid for advertising, every visitor we have ever had is due to some site kindly announcing us. There is such a long list here, but I'll try. JediNights.com, Admiral's Command Chamber, JediKnight.net, Blue's News, Voodoo Extreme, R.U.S.T., PC Gamer, LucasArts, Sith Temple, Jedi Legacy, ClanNetwork, Outpost D-34, PlanetJedi, *cough*Holocron Editing*cough*, Stomped, Seriously!, Code-Alliance, and TheForce.net. I'm sure I missed some, but it's difficult to remember everyone.
- Thanks to UGO for the period of financial support.
- Thanks to Ewok for the logo! That damn thing was amazing when we first got it, and I still love the whisps of smoke.
- Thanks to Activision and Nihilistic Software for supporting my temporary Vampire addiction. It was very nice to have a site based on a game that actually got support from its creators.
- Thanks to every person that's ever worked on one of my sites... FCOutpost, Wattos's Junkyard, Indy's Inferno, Vampire Central, PlanetVampire, etc.
- Thanks to everyone that participated in Saberworks, even though we never released the damn mod.
- Thanks to MikeC for keeping up the editing forum for so long. Someone, add this guy to the staff already!
- Thanks to Uber(HOV) for never getting off ICQ... ever. That's just insane.
- Thanks to Ryan from CommandChamber.net - you'll never find a more dedicated person.
- Raynar for all the server help.
- Thanks to the magazines that featured the site in both their online and print publications. PC Gamer, Computer Games, and PC Gamer UK.
- Thanks to Azlon and Khobolt for first accepting me into their editing group (Manowars), and thanks for including one of my first levels with Manowar 2. You have no idea how far a bit of praise goes.
- Thanks to every single solitary web site that has ever linked us. Period. There is no higher compliment.
- Thanks to every level author that ever submitted a level to our site. Your creations have always been the main draw to this site for the majority of people. Thanks for putting your work out there, and thanks for gracefully dealing with the criticism as well as the praise. Please never stop sharing your creations with the world, no matter how insignificant they may seem at the time.
- Thanks to every level author that ever submitted a level (or 3) to one of our contests.
- Thanks to UggBoot for all the various programs and input over the life of the site.
- Thanks to Dave @ Code-Alliance for server help and other various support.
- Thanks to ThreeDee for his awesome design work @ Serious Editing.
- Thanks to Alexei Novikov and the entire Code-Alliance crew for all their JK editing programs - without these guys, Massassi would never have existed.
- Thanks to MaDaVentor for helping me realize that forgiveness and tolerance are more productive than anger.
- Thanks to Jepman for finally proving that I'm not always a poor judge of character. Thanks for proving that people can and do improve, given the chance. Thanks for proving that my long emails aren't always wasted. Thanks for being a friend at times I really needed one. Thanks for all the encouragement through the lives of all my projects.
- Thanks to all the forum moderators that have helped out over time. This site has, in my opinion, the best community on the internet.
- Thanks to every person that's ever submitted an abuse report in the level commenting system.
- Thanks to every reviewer that spent time helping out the site. Thanks to every person that applied to be a reviewer. Without people willing to help, this site would be nothing.
- Thanks to Cali-Girl for all the news and conversation.
- Thanks to CEONelson for hanging out and making programs.
- Tom 'Magi' Smallwood for all the work on Shadar Logoth.
- Takimoto for all the late night conversations.
- GuNbOy for Instagib! And all the damn chat.
- Thanks to Aristotle for the initial support and overwhelming dedication to the JK/LEC community.
- Thanks to Jon Sampson for all the artwork and moral support.
- Thanks to Andy Raposo for the kind words that helped me regain my faith in people in general, as well as his unique insight.
- Thanks to mehab4 for hours of comic relief.
- Thanks to BoBo Fett for the long conversations and mutual support across our sites.
- Thanks to everyone that's helped on JK Arena, especially oSiRiS and Rishka for the endless hours of beta-testing, cogging, and level building. Yes, JK Arena will be released!
- Thanks to g0thm0g for the help on the massassi.org server.
- Thanks to MassBot, a true friend. Please don't reactivate him, his last few weeks were turbulent times. I think he got a virus.
- Thanks to the whole crew over at Watto's Junkyard. I've never met a more upbeat and positive group of people in my entire life. TheRiddler, Jester, and Sailor Coruscant. Special thanks Chris, for serving our country in these troubled times.
- Thanks to all my friends and aquaintences in the chat... Way too many to list, but you guys rock. Sorry for that one time I kick/banned every last one of you, including myself. It was an accident... honest... lordvader, JBF, Hoard, Moose, \, Sine_Nomen, Deth, Jim7, CapnPolo, Skimpy, L3CY, sub, Wolvie, Wolfy, lt_greywolf, Aglar, burrie, BuuBox, Cave_Demon, Evad, DeTRiTiC-iQ, Elmo, Emon, MysticJupiter, Flexor, Gunboy, Is, Jabber, JediStarC, Jedi_Legend, JorBo, kak, Ketaris, MattK, MaxisReed, Naythn, Rob, Rasolas, THREE DEE, smv0, PedHead, Yecti, DeathKow, Sarn_Cadrill, Sinc, murta, SavageX, Zecks, and yes, even Ubuu. - Thanks to Mangore Kiramin, a person I met online and is now one of my dearest friends. Kiramin helped on the site many times over the years, but more importantly, he has helped me put all of life in perspective. I learn something new from him every time we talk.
- Thanks especially to Kedri for the years of work and support. For the friendship, the insight, and the utter honesty. Thanks for being one of the few people willing to tell me when I'm being stupid. Thanks for the many designs for my failed and successful projects over time. Thanks for coming out to CA for E3, I had a blast. Thanks for taking time out of your life to deal with me and my problems. Thanks for committing so much time and energy to the Massassi community. Thanks most of all for lending an ear when I needed one.
- Thanks to my family for putting up with me using their computer during my holiday visits for updating the site. Thanks for supporting my decision to spend so much time on my sites even though you don't understand the obsession. Thanks for being supportive of my decisions, even when you may not have agreed with them.
- Finally, and most importantly, thanks to God in Heaven and Jesus Christ.
It's very difficult to imagine life without all the people I've met through Massassi. I wouldn't give any of it up for the world.
If everything works out, you'll find more of me in print and on the internet as time passes, but not any time too soon. And that's all I have to say about that.
Until next time,
Brian
