Aesthetics:

A Tale of Two Levels? For Battle on the Outer Rim Part 1, that is certainly the case. The first half of the level is characterized by large-scale architecture and poor lighting, while the second half features solid architecture and wonderful lighting. Texturing and framerate range consistently from mediocre to poor throughout the entire pack. In terms of aesthetics, there is not much going on dynamically in the level. There is a quick little cutscene and a few new puzzles. Basically, this level could use some spicing up in the aesthetic department.

Gameplay:

Like the aesthetics, the gameplay is a mixed bag. There are two cool puzzles that I found very inventive, but other than that the level is fairly mundane. The beginning can be especially frustrating because of a door that is difficult to find. The level is not much of a challenge, and I beat it easily on the hardest setting the first time through. Technical aspects like enemy and item placement are both decent, but did not really add anything to the level. Everything about the level is average, and gameplay is no exception.

Final Comments:

This is a decent level. It does not play tremendously well, nor does it look incredibly good. Being the first part of a three part series, however, I recommend that you download it along with its counterparts.
