Abandoned Lab
Author: [Rogue Leader] Reviewer: [Posse]
- Aesthetics:
- To start off, we'll look at architecture. On the whole, architecture in this level is very good. The level is basically One large center room (screen 1) with surrounding hallways and 2 minor rooms(example in screen 2) branching off of those. A simple layout, yet effective. The architecture itself is quite good also. There are no boxes to be found, every hallway has nicely slanted walls with some sort of beams on the ceiling to give them a better look. This look goes both ways however... The beams in the hallways make the lighting much tougher, and the lighting in the hallways does not look good as a result. Apart from the hallways, the main room also has nice architecture. With the use of some simple architectural designs (see screen 1, against the walls) the room looks more detailed. However, once again lighting suffers. The center decoration in the main room (see screen 1) looks completely black if you are not on top of it. Next, the texturing. The author chose good textures, but he did not vary them enough. He needed a few more. Notice screen 1... the ceiling is just one texture, and a plain one at that. The ceilings are the same texture throughout. Same goes for the walls. If the author would have used more textures, the level would have had a longer lasting appeal.
- Gameplay:
- Gameplay in this level is quite good. The big weapons are in the two minor rooms (screen 2 shows one of them), with the other weapons nicely placed throughout. Ammo and shields are located around every turn of the hallways that circle the level, making it easy to find what you need for your intense battles. The flow is not bad, as there are four ways into the main room and two ways into each of the side rooms. action is quick, as this level is not too big. With four people you will have a good time playing this. Framerate did not drop anywhere and this should provide a good low lag/high framerate game. The only drawback would be the requirement of force to get up top in the center room (where i'm at in screen 1). There's a lot of good stuff that could be useful in battle...
- Final Comments:
- This level has a good layout and offers solid gameplay. The author also did a great job architecturally, keeping every room and hallway interesting. But, the level is hurt by the texturing and lighting. If the author would have spent just a bit more time, this could have been one great level. Though it may not be great, it's still good.
