Canyon Oasis In Winter
Author: [SavageX] Reviewer: [jturcio]
Aesthetics:
SavageX took LEC's oasis, and changed almost every mat in the level to reflect a more "wintry" appearance. The reason I say almost is because I found a few mats that were present in the original oasis that hadn't been modified. Another addition to the level was the icicle-style stalactites which are present in many parts of the level. They looked great and added to the atmosphere of the level quite nicely. One of the things that really shines in this level is the unique way that SavageX re-lighted it. The level's lighting correctly reflected the way a "wintry" environment would show up. Locations such as the areas where you could find the dark and light surges were lighted darkly. This is perfect considering that any light that would come near those locations would be blocked by the architecture in the level. Also, all of the underwater areas were tinted and lighted perfectly as well.
Gameplay:
The gameplay aspects of this level would have fallen right in line with the original canyon oasis if SavageX didn't make these few additions. One of the most noticeable gameplay effecting addition is the fact that the main "oasis" area is no longer just water but a solid sheet of ice with only one opening. The only other opening is found where you would normally enter or exit the water by the dark force surge and concussion rifle. With the limited number of entrances and exits it makes it harder to get at the concussion rifle let alone survive the journey back out of the water. This in my opinion cuts down on the concussion-fest's that often occurs in most other canyon oasis mods and the original as well. Another addition to the level was the addition of a secondary and rather nasty secondary trap to the already force lighting protected ramp. In this case, the cog is attached to a switch (right next to the on/off switch for the force lighting trap) and causes a barrage of "snowballs" to go sliding down both the force lighting slope, and the slope leading up towards the rail detonator when activated. The deadly part about them is the fact that they are very much related to the way a thermal detonator works on secondary fire, so if you get caught in their wake, you'll most likely be respawing in another part of the level in no time at all. The good part about these gameplay altering additions is that they really add to the gameplay and change it in a way as to make it more interesting than the original.
Final Comments:
If you would like to check out an above average canyon oasis mod, go ahead and download it. I myself, however, do not find that the additions can justify the download either.
