Castle Courtyard
Author: [Dylan] Reviewer: [darkjedi86]
- Aesthetics:
- The visuals in Castle Courtyard were outstanding. With very nice architecture, the level is set in a castle courtyard with beautiful scenery in the backgrounds, such as hills and rivers. The one visual that I didn’t care much for was the yellow tinting on some parts of the level. I believe it was to mimic the warm sunlight, but it got annoying and looked a bit ugly. It also caused the regular lighting in the level to flicker at times, I think, which is also annoying. The elevator that took you up to the top of the tower in the center was also well done, and the tops of the castle walls were as well done as the bottom.
- Gameplay:
- The gameplay in this level flowed beautifully. You were mainly on the bottom floor of the castle courtyard, but you could take an elevator up to the top of center tower. You could also jump to the top of the castle walls, but you could only get there with force jump. On top of the walls were “invisible walls” that prevented you from going into the scenery area. This worked beautifully, but two “invisible walls” were passable, letting you enter into the scenery area. You can’t get back unless you have force jump, but since you needed force jump to get on top of the walls in the first place, it isn’t all that bad. But, the area that you shouldn’t have been able to enter was bug city. Couple of surfaces that you couldn’t walk on, the dflt.mat here and there, misaligned textures, etc. The weapons were laid out decently, with no weapons at all on top of the walls, so people who don’t play with force can still get all the weapons. I say decently because 70% of all the weapons and items were in the same place, which can be bad. The most powerful weapon is the repeater, so there are no rail detonators or concussion rifles in the level, as far as I could tell. The level was of small size, but it flowed wonderfully, other than the bugs.
- Final Comments:
- The level was very well done. If only those bugs were cinched out, it would be a much better level. I would recommend downloading it, it is still very fun. In closing, I’d like to make a tip to other authors. Please, before you release a level, make sure it has absolutely no bugs in it. Makes it much more fun and it gets a better score!
