The Octogon Mines - Deeper Levels

- Aesthetics:
- Octogon Mines - The Deeper Levels was mixed aesthetically. There were areas of above average looks, but also many errors and inconsistencies. The architecture was boxy for the most part, but the author was able to add some fabricated add-ons to make it seem less so. The texturing in the level showed some effort, but was still repetitive. There were a few texturing misalignments, and a large wall which should not have been rendered, but was anyway. There were small cogs, mostly consisting of a few elevators and cameras. Furthermore, the level was not physically correct, as water would stop for no apparent reason, a wall of water. Lighting was decent, and the author showed genuine concern by adding a lamp 3do for every light he placed, giving a source, making it more realistic. If the author took more time in cleaving the surfaces, and smoothing out some jagged areas of light, it would have been more impressive.
- Gameplay:
- The gameplay was not very promising in this level. It consisted mainly of hallways, which were cramped, and fit one player abreast. These halls were usually long, which meant that you could easily be trapped and killed if playing with guns. From a saberists point of view, all the areas lacked sufficient head room to have a real saber match. Item placement was good, the larger weapons were kept sufficiently out of reach, while there was access to smaller guns. Framerate stayed at a decent solid number, and I didn’t experience much lag. The level flowed with mediocrity .
- Final Comments:
- Had the author considered the fact that sabering and gunning requires more room, this level could have been greatly improved. There was a definite show of effort and talent, but in the end this level is not recommendable for a true deathmatch. Gunners and saberists alike should look elsewhere for a good game.
